Lingerie 101: The first lesson of the year for your school-age daughter.

We instinctively teach our daughters the important things in life and try our best to instill values that prepare them for life as an adult.  The one personal topic many women fail to take the lead on is lingerie.  A good place to start is to teach her the significance of an expert bra-fitting, a habit she should develop, because a proper fitting bra will help boost her self-esteem and self-confidence as her body changes and matures.  Include a chat about breast health, (which goes hand-in-hand with buying the proper lingerie).  Teach her to do a monthly breast self-exam, so she’s comfortable and familiar with the shape and feel of her breasts in order to detect any changes.

Here are some helpful tips.

Explain what a bra-fitting is – It should be the foundation of her personal care routine.  Help your young teen book her first appointment (accompany her if she is comfortable with that).

Teach by example – If your bras fit properly, then your daughter will instinctively learn how bras should fit and will shop to get the same result.

Enhance self-confidence - Some girls try to hide their developing breasts, others are self-conscious because they aren’t developing like their peers.  Wearing the right bra will give support and help sidetrack back and headaches for those with a fuller bust or help give a little enhancement for slower developers.  The right bra will enhance posture because when she feels better about herself, she’ll stand taller.

Promote self-esteem - Wearing quality undergarments instills a sense of self-pride.  My mother taught me to be conscious of what I wore under my clothing and to wear nice lingerie for myself, not anyone else.  (Forget the age-old warning about getting in an accident and the doctor seeing your underwear!)

Caring for delicate lingerie - It’s difficult to get teens to take the time to care for anything let alone lingerie! If you gently handwash your delicates and hang them to dry, she will learn by example.

Healthy reminders - Don’t wear thongs during your period.
Wear panties with a cotton gusset.
Wear a sports bra for athletic activities.

On a personal note, I am thrilled to announce the birth of my second grandchild, a little girl.  Logan Harlow was born June 6 at 12:43pm, to my son Michael and his wife Jennifer, at a petite, 5lbs. 9oz., I am SO happy and proud to be a grandma again and look forward to the fun of a future bra wearer!
